15-Minute Trader Joe’s Shaved Beef Skillet Recipe

Trader Joe’s shaved beef cooks in one skillet with bell pepper, onion, seasoning, and provolone in 15 minutes. The beef sears first, rests on a plate, and goes back in with the softened vegetables and all of its juices. One skillet feeds four and is done before the rice finishes cooking.

The technique is cooking the beef and vegetables in stages rather than at the same time. Adding the shaved beef and vegetables at the same time fills the pan and the beef steams instead of searing. Cooking them in stages and combining at the end keeps each ingredient at its best texture.

Shaved beef is cut paper-thin from the rib cap, and that thickness means it needs only 3 minutes to cook through. The goal in those first 3 minutes is a crust, not just browning. A single layer in a hot pan without moving the meat for the first 2 minutes is what lets that crust form.

15-Minute Trader Joe’s Shaved Beef Skillet Recipe with bell pepper, onion, provolone, and Trader Joe’s 21 Salute Seasoning. One pan, four easy servings.

Ingredients

  • Skillet
  • 2-3 tsp olive oil

  • 1 lb Trader Joe’s shaved beef

  • 2 tsp sea salt, divided

  • 2 tsp Trader Joe’s 21 Salute Seasoning

  • 1 large bell pepper, diced

  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced

  • 4 slices provolone cheese

  • To Serve
  • Cooked rice or hoagie rolls

Directions

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shaved beef and season with 1 tsp sea salt and 2 tsp 21 Salute Seasoning. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, breaking up the beef with tongs without moving it for the first 2 minutes. Transfer to a plate and cover loosely with foil.
  • In the same skillet, add the diced bell pepper and onion. Season with the remaining 1 tsp sea salt. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are fully soft.
  • Return the beef and any juices from the plate back to the skillet. Toss everything together to combine.
  • Lay the 4 provolone slices over the top of the beef and vegetable mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid or baking sheet and let the cheese melt for 1 minute.
  • Serve immediately over cooked rice, or pile into hoagie rolls for a Philly-style sandwich.

FAQs

Can I use a different seasoning if I can’t find Trader Joe’s 21 Salute?

Any dried Italian or steak seasoning blend covers most of the same flavor profile. Garlic powder, dried oregano, and dried thyme in equal parts makes a workable three-ingredient version that takes less than a minute to mix. The key is a blend that includes herbs and garlic without extra salt, since this recipe already seasons the beef and vegetables separately.

Does the provolone have to melt under a lid, or can I skip the cover?

The lid traps steam and melts the cheese from above in about one minute without drying out the beef below. Without a lid the cheese takes 3 to 4 minutes from below and the beef dries out in that time. If you do not have a lid, lay a baking sheet flat over the skillet to create the same effect.

Does the shaved beef need to be fully thawed before it goes into the skillet?

Thawing in the refrigerator overnight is the most reliable method and keeps the beef at a safe temperature throughout. Running the sealed package under cold water for 15 to 20 minutes works if time is short and the packaging stays intact. Cooking from frozen releases too much moisture to sear and the beef comes out grey and soft.

What other Trader Joe’s protein recipe uses the same one-pan approach in under 20 minutes?

Most Trader Joe’s proteins that come thinly sliced or fully cooked move quickly in a hot skillet with minimal prep. A Trader Joe’s pork belly recipe on this site gives a second protein option with the same minimal cleanup. The two pair well as alternating weeknight dinners when you want variety without adding to the shopping list.

What TJ’s noodle dish rounds out the week alongside this skillet?

A lighter, broth-based dinner on a following night balances out the richness of the skillet without repeating the same protein or vegetables. A Trader Joe’s ramen recipe on this site uses squiggly knife-cut noodles, chili onion crunch, and a soft-boiled egg, and is done in 15 minutes. Together they cover two quick weeknights from the same short shopping run.
